This past summer, I partook in an honors seminar titled Intermediate English Composition. It took place on Tuesdays from 3:30-6:30pm. It involved about twenty-some other students, one professor, and one “grandmother.”
...Don’t worry, we’ll get back to that.
I chose to engage in this experience because my curriculum required. I honestly didn’t realize this seminar was an experience, so, candidly speaking, I just got lucky. It most definitely met my expectations, as I had been in an English class before, and it seemed a lot like the other classes I’ve taken before. That is, until we were assigned our group project with Granny’s Garden School in Loveland, Ohio. Granny’s Garden School is a non-profit organization led by Granny Roberta Paolo. It partners up with the Loveland School District to teach its elementary school students about gardening and cultivation. It relates back to the curriculum they learn in their classes, which I personally thought was awesome.
For the first three weeks of the class, I learned different genres of literature, and analyzed their effects. At the end of that “trimester,” my peers and I took on two challenges: one, to compose an informational pamphlet for Granny’s Garden School, and two, to create our own persuasive material using any genre of our choosing.
While both challenges seemed impossible at the time of their assignment, I found that it could be accomplished with the help of my peers. Even though the class was only held once a week, I ended up being very close with my peers because of the strong collaboration we had together. We worked together on the pamphlet to create a product worthy of our client’s noble cause, and to edit each other’s papers. The most valuable lesson I learned in that class was that no task was too big to accomplish with the collaboration of one’s peers. I will use that in the future to accomplish tasks that seem larger than life. It’s never bad to ask for help.
